Well, since we're on the subject, I might as well dish on what I like. Generally speaking, I like almost everything. At 52, I have some difficulty enjoying a lot of rap and hiphop. There's some that I can do, but not a lot.
So...hmmm...where to start. How about Desert Island records! If I were on a desert island, with just a monkey and a music player, what would I really have to have?
Joni Mitchell - Blue
Beatles - Rubber Soul
Kathleen Battle - Bel Canto
Westminster Cathedral Choir - Victoria: Requiem - Officium defunctorum
Boston - Boston
Isabella Lippi - Rozsa: The Complete Music for Solo Violin
Roy Buchanan - Roy Buchanan
Thelonious Monk - Live at the It Club
Alan Hovhaness - Symphony no.50 "Mt. St. Helen's / And God Created Great Whales
Paul Simon - Graceland
U2 - Joshua Tree
Of course, this isnt an exhaustive list, but would give me a different record every few days. I think I'd have to limit myself and only listen to music on rare occasions, so I wouldnt get too bored with it all.
Other favorites include just about anything from Alan Hovhaness, most of the Leopold Stokowski recordings, Faure's Requiem with Sylvia McNair, Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, Gorillaz, Roger Miller - Golden Hits, most anything from Miles Davis, Carlos Santana - Zebop, Arvo Part - Fratres, Linda Ronstadt - Heart Like a Wheel, Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily, Willie Nelson - Living in the Promised Land.
From here it's probably best to just tell you artist whose work I enjoy. This I say because there may not be full albums that I think of as favorites, but an overall body of work.
Yes, J.J. Cale, Carlos Montoya, Gipsy Kings, Tish Hinojosa, Mary Black, Van Morrison,Duke Ellington, Johnny Cash, Emmy Lou Harris, Sons of the Pioneers, Les Paul, Wes Montgomery, Eleftheria Kotzia, Sumi Jo, Chee Yun, Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, Charlie Parker, Savoy Brown.
So, there are a few of my favorites. There are way too many to list, but it's a start. In the meantime, here's something "special".
